PRODUCTION 4: FIRST PITCH

VOCABULARY FUN

February 3rd, 2018

As my interest in English language instruction increases throughout this program, I am pitching an idea that involves heightening vocabulary learning in the classroom.

Genre: Educational/Language Learning

The Gist: This game is meant to be played in classrooms under the supervision of teachers. Teachers can use this as a fun way to ballpark where students are at in terms of their English proficiency while engaging students in motivational tasks to learn vocabulary. Players will increase their English vocabulary in regards to everyday objects, tasks, occupations, and environments.

Rules: The game will have levels, each level presenting a new task for the player to complete (number of levels to be determined). The player starts out with 5 lives, each time a level is completed, the player gains a life. However, if the player were to lose a level, a life is taken from them. The goal of the game is to complete the game before losing all their lives. When this is accomplished, an external reward will be given, which will be pre-determined between the student and the teacher (i.e., free time, no homework, etc.).

Participants: This will be a single-player game and will be geared towards a younger audience (Grade 2-5).

Level 1: Matching

The goal of this level is to match the correct object (picture) to the written word. There will be a series of pictures on one side of the screen and corresponding words on the other side of the screen. The player must match each word with the correct picture to move on to the next level. There will be multiple tasks to complete, each of its own theme (i.e., sports, classroom supplies, people, etc.).

Level 2: Spelling

This level will require the player to spell out each object that is presented to them. For instance, if the player is presented with a pencil, he or she must spell out “PENCIL” in order to move on to the next level. Again, there will be multiple tasks to complete with varying objects to spell out.

Level 3: Listening

Players in this level will be asked to listen to a word and then select the correct image from a series of images. For example: if the game says “PENCIL”, the player would then select the image of a pencil.
